Puglia, colour-pictures

In 2008 and early 2009 there were almost daily reports of immigrants arriving in small boats from Libya to the Italian island of Lampedusa. Where are the migrants now? In part they disappear into the underground looking for work in the informal circuit. Photographer Piet den Blanken found a lot of them in the tomato harvest in the northern part of Puglia region. In the province of Foggia, located on the Adriatic Sea, only immigrants are working in this agricultural seasonal work . Many are illegal Africans, alongside Romanians and Bulgarians, mainly gypsies from these Eastern European countries. Especially the Africans stay in appalling conditions in abandoned buildings in rural aereas and in plastic huts in and around these houses, there is no running water, electricity or toilet.
